On Mother’s Day, we honour all of the mothers in our lives and show them how appreciated they are. Your family may take part in a special meal, a favourite pastime, or go on a special outing, but showing the special moms in our lives how much we care is at the top of our list. If you still aren’t quite sure how to show your mom you care consider giving her a gift that keeps on giving: a tree, shrub, or flowering plant. In honour of all moms I am sharing my top ten plants that would make a great gift for Mother’s Day.
The first on my top ten list is a hardy apple tree. Growing an apple tree is a rewarding task: there is nothing like reaping the benefits of your own harvest! Whether your mom likes fresh apples straight from the tree, or delights in baking with or preserving them, an apple tree is sure to please.
Second on my list is a Barberry shrub. These shrubs are more than just hardy: they will withstand our winters, and tolerate almost any soil condition. They are easy to grow, with very little maintenance and also provide great colour and interest in the garden.
Carnations are next on my list as a great gift for mom. They are a traditional flower to give to show love and appreciation, and with so many varieties you are sure to find one she will love. There are annual and perennial versions of carnations, both with an assortment of colours to choose from.
Geraniums are a well loved annual plant, and for good reason: their bright and bold flowers provide a colourful show all season long. I am especially impressed with a new variety ___(new pink and white variety)____ and I am sure any mom would enjoy the stunning colours.
If your mom loves a mix of colours a confetti mix is the way to go. These mixes are specially designed to grow beautifully together in a single pot. Each combination is perfect for any garden option from an urban window or balcony box right up to hanging baskets. They pack a powerful punch of colour and are sure to be appreciated all season long.
Gerbera Daisies are great performers, with their large, brightly coloured flowers. They are great in mixed containers, or simply potted up on their own. They can be grown indoors or out, making them a good option for a bright window, sun room, or balcony.
Whether your mom is new to gardening, or has a true green thumb she is sure to appreciate a Hosta. Well known as a top choice for a shade garden, new varieties emerge each year boasting of sun tolerance, great colour variation, or sheer size. Hostas require little care and have much value in the landscape.
For moms who like big, bold, blooms a daylily is a great choice. Daylilies provide masses of flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red, purple, and white, and some varieties are highly fragrant. They bloom for a number of weeks during the summer and many rebloom in the fall.
Peonies are a long lived perennial which are drought tolerant, low maintenance, and deer resistant. They come in a range of colours, including yellow, coral, peach and lavender, in addition to white, blush, pink, magenta, and red. Many varieties are highly fragrant, and the sheer size of the flowers make for a stunning show.
My list would not be complete without including Bleeding Hearts. True to their name, these perennials bear charming heart shaped flowers in shades of pink, white, and red. They provide a flush of each spring, and some varieties continue to bloom throughout the season.
This Mother’s Day show the Moms in your life just how special they are with a gift they can continue to enjoy for years to come!
